Village Pines Garden Club wins several awards at AFGC Convention

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Members of the Village Pines Garden Club recently won several awards at the state level, and from the National Garden Clubs South Central Region of Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, at an Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs convention.

Barbara Wallish won second place in the state for her Arbor Day project; Joyce Gallagher won the Brovo Award; Patty Bridges and Joann Tenny won second place in Civic Beautification for their butterfly garden; and Rosalyn Halbert and her committee won first place in civic achievement for their work on the Cortez Historical Gravesite, which is located near the entrance to Cortez golf course.

In the South Central Regional competition, the club won first place in Civic Development and the Heritage Award and second place in Landscape Design.

Other awards won at both levels include the following: Mary Ellen Gardner, first place in state for her history book and first place in the Individual Service Award; Martha Vaughn, first place in state and honorable mention in the South Central Region for her National Garden Week presentation; Millie Connelly, Gail Harmeyer and Sue Loberg, first place in state and second place in South Central Region for their press book; Nancy Carpenter, first place in state for the Horticulture Award; Elaine Hershey, first place in state and second place in South Central Region for her yearbook; and Jubilee Song Forbess, granddaughter of member Linda Labowski, Youth Award for first place in state in the poetry contest.
