City taking applications for boards, commissions

City officials will accept applications for 17 volunteer positions on advisory boards and commissions until 5 p.m. Sept. 19.

Applicants must be registered voters of the city unless otherwise specified. Advisory group members are appointed by the Hot Springs Board of Directors. Most of the groups hold their meetings in City Hall, 133 Convention Blvd.

The openings are as follows:

• Airport Advisory Committee -- four openings. The committee assists the airport manager and city manager in the development and review of airport operating policies and procedures. Meetings are held at 4 p.m. the third Thursday of the month in the terminal building at Hot Springs Memorial Field, 525 Airport Road.

• Animal Control Advisory Committee -- one opening. The committee meets as needed and assists Animal Services in evaluating policies and procedures, including public education concerning responsible pet ownership. Meetings are held at the John Seales Animal Services Center, 319 Davidson Drive.

• Arts Advisory Committee -- three openings. Responsibilities are to review and recommend placement of permanent art at publicly-owned facilities in the city; assist in the organization and promotion of temporary art exhibits at publicly owned facilities; and assist in securing private grant funding and art donations for permanent art displays at public buildings in the city. Meetings are held in City Hall on an as-needed basis.

• Community Development Advisory Committee -- one opening. Residents must be from board District 2 to be eligible to serve. The committee evaluates and establishes operating policies and procedures for the CDBG Entitlement Program and meets at 1 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in City Hall.

• Historic District Commission -- two openings. The commission oversees historic district rules and regulations. Applicants must be owners of real property, or officers or stockholders of owners of real property, or business owners, or officers or stockholders of businesses within the Central Avenue Historic District, or an owner of real property, or officer or stockholder of owner of real property, or business owner, or officer or stockholder of businesses within the Pleasant Street Historic District. There is one opening for each district. Meetings are held at 8 a.m. the third Thursday in City Hall.

• Parks and Trails Advisory Committee -- one opening. The committee provides guidance and oversight for the city's parks and trails programming, planning and policy development. Meetings are held at 5 p.m. the third Thursday of the month.

• Planning Commission -- three openings. The commission reviews all land development proposals within the city and subdivisions outside the corporate limits to insure compliance with the zoning code. The commission meets at 6 p.m. the second Thursday of each month in City Hall. For one opening, residents must be from board District 6 to be eligible to serve. For two openings, residents must reside in the planning area but outside the city limits.

• Transportation Advisory Committee -- one opening. The committee assists the board of directors and city staff in the establishment of policies for the city's public transit system and public transportation issues of a general nature. Meetings are held as needed at Transportation Depot, 100 Broadway Terrace.

• Urban Forestry Committee -- one opening. The committee promotes, protects, and enhances the beauty, environmental benefits and general welfare of Hot Springs' urban forest. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Engineering Department Conference Room at City Hall.
