Dear editor: Honor a veteran

Dear editor:

I would like to remind folks in Garland County that the Veteran's Memorial Committee will hold another ceremony at the site of the Veteran's Memorial at Transportation Plaza at 11 a.m. Veteran's Day, Nov. 11 (Tuesday). If you have not already honored some family member that served in the U.S. military services with a brick or granite paver at the Veteran's Memorial, now is your chance to obtain a brick or paver for that veteran.

The deadline for ordering new bricks and pavers for the Veteran's Day ceremony is Sept. 1, 2014, in order to have it placed in the Veteran's Memorial in time for our Veteran's Day ceremony on Nov. 11, 2014. You can obtain a brick application at the kiosk at the Veteran's Memorial, where a small, black mailbox is attached to the side of the kiosk, or you can go to the Veteran's Memorial web site at: http://gcvets.com/ and scroll down to the bottom, left side of the Home page and click on the link that says: "Download brick order form" and print that out and fill out the top three lines for the veteran and the rest of the form. Send that form, along with a donation for $100 to Veterans Memorial, P.O. BOX 3955, Hot Springs, AR 71914. Make the check out to Veterans Memorial and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like a return receipt. Otherwise, your canceled check will be your receipt.

The Veteran's Memorial Committee is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization, and all donations to us should be deductible on your taxes. Ask you tax adviser about this. The Veteran's Memorial is hallowed ground and all of us owe a debt of gratitude to the veterans that have served in our military to protect our country, and some of them made the supreme sacrifice with their lives when doing so!

The Veteran's Committee has been selling raffle tickets for a rare and expensive commemorative Winchester 1874 rifle and the winning ticket will be drawn at our ceremony on Veteran's Day. If you haven't already purchased your $10 raffle ticket yet, you better get one now, as somebody is going to win that beautiful 24K gold-plated rifle on Veteran's Day!

The Veteran's Committee is also raising donations to purchase a "Fallen Hero Memorial" statue that will be represented by the late U.S. Navy SEAL, Adam Brown, who was killed in combat on March 17, 2010, in Afghanistan with SEAL Team 6 members. Dick Antoine and Tom Wilkins are heading up this fundraising effort and you can see them or mail your tax deductible donation to our Veteran's Memorial, P.O. Box 3955, Hot Springs, AR 71914 and write on your check your donation is for the bronze statue of the late Navy SEAL Adam Brown.

Remember: All gave some and some gave all!
