The Sentinel-Record/Jeff Smith BARGAIN HUNTERS: Shoppers arrived early Saturday morning looking for bargains at the inaugural Junk in the Trunk fundraiser by the Lake Hamilton Fire and Rescue Department.

The Lake Hamilton Fire and Rescue Department's first "Junk in the Trunk" fundraiser, held Saturday at Station No. 2, was a success, according to board Vice President Steve Manning, who created the event.

Funds were raised through booth fees, donations, and the sale of food and products that were donated to the fire department.

The Sentinel-Record/Jeff Smith COME AND GET IT: The smell of cooking hamburgers and hotdogs had visitors trying to decide whether to eat or shop first at Saturday's Junk in the Trunk.

"For a first effort, we were pleased with the number of vendors, those who came by and shopped as well as the businesses who contribute food and other items to help us out. We'll take it from here and build on it. The vendors who participated were pleased we had the event. We'll see how many times it will be feasible to have an event like this and what we can do to improve it," Manning said.

Sixteen vendors participated and brought an array of items, from unwanted household items that were sold from a trunk, to full-fledged arts and crafts booths complete with canopies. Members of the fire department were on hand to cook food, direct parking and to pass out Firewise materials to visitors. Others members staffed a food tent, selling doughnuts from Shipley's as well as cupcakes and cookies. Landra Roberts made three different flavors of cupcakes.

Several of the department members had been on two calls the night before, but pressed ahead and staffed their stations.

"We're all tired, but we're here to have a good day, greet our vendors and customers and tell them about our fire department, future plans and needs," board President Wayne Roberts said.

Daniel Johnson and Craig Holmes did the bulk of the cooking duties at the food tent, cooking cheeseburgers and hot dogs. Guests could sit in the shade at nearby tables.
