Professional musician and educator Shelley Martin is currently accepting new students for the fall semester. There are openings for piano, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.

Students of all ages and ability levels are accepted, including those who would like to learn melodies on their instruments or piano skills "by ear." Some of her most recent student successes include earning the first chair trumpet, clarinet and saxophone positions at the 2014 Henderson State University Junior High Summer Band Camp.

Martin's credentials include a Bachelor of Music Education degree from HSU and a Master of Music in Flute Performance degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She teaches music at St. John's Catholic School and has assisted as an adjunct band instructor in many Hot Springs area schools. She taught band for eight years in the public schools and was the flute instructor at Henderson for 11 years.

Some of her past student accomplishments include: All-State Jazz Band first chair alto saxophone and All-State Band first chair tenor saxophone (same student); consecutive years with the All-State First Band third, fourth, and fifth chair flutists, followed by the second, third, and fourth chair flutists; dozens of All-State Band clarinet players; and hundreds of All-Region Band participants.

According to Martin, many parents prefer to spend money now rather than later in preparation for college scholarships and financial awards for superior performance skills. Many of these are awarded by numerous universities (non-music majors are also eligible for scholarships), the Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Music Club Annual Scholarship Competition, and the Hot Springs Concert Band Outstanding Student Participation Competition.

Lessons are offered once weekly in 45 or 60 minute sessions. Contact Martin at 282-8145 or at [email protected].
