Lady Troy wins at White Hall

WHITE HALL -- Hot Springs jumped ahead by 18 points in the first half, preserving the margin for a 47-29 victory over Fordyce in White Hall's Relyance Classic Friday at Bert Honey Gymnasium.

Hot Springs (5-2) led 15-3 after one quarter and 28-10 by halftime, cruising through the second half for the second time this week. The Lady Trojans built a 39-18 advantage after three quarters before outscored 11-8 in the fourth.

Kiki Hunter led the Lady Trojans with a season-high 17 points. Berniezha Tidwell added 13 points and Tiaunna Watkins eight.

Hot Springs concludes the two-day event at 10 a.m. today against Hamburg.

Sheridan JH-Lakeside

Ashton Patrick scored 14 points and Thea Rice nine as Lakeside's junior girls (6-2) defeated visiting Sheridan 31-21 Thursday.

The Lady Rams return to action Friday in the Sheridan Invitational.

Batesville-Lakeside

A fast start and a furious finish bookended a mid-game lull that did in the Lakeside Lady Rams Friday night.

A 16-0 run spanning 5:55 in the second and third quarters propelled Batesville to a a 53-49 road victory, the Lady Pioneers overcoming a 19-4 tear that staked Lakeside to a 47-45 lead with 3:23 left.

Nena Igbokidi scored a game-high 21 points for Lakeside (6-3), making seven of nine from the field and six of nine free throws. Hayley Cole's 14 points led Batesville (3-5).

Lakeside missed 10 straight shots and turned the ball over 10 times during a scoreless streak of 9:53, Batesville going up 41-26 in the third quarter.

Tatum Rice made two threes and Karli Herron another, the backcourt tandem combining for four assists, as Lakeside went up 22-13 early in the second quarter. Lakeside scored nine points off seven Batesville turnovers in going up 24-16 on Madeline Perrigo's basket with 5:18 before halftime.

Batesville rallied ahead 30-26 before halftime, Lakeside with seven turnovers in 10 possessions (the Lady Rams totaled 21) and missing its last four shots over five minutes.

HSU's Rodgers second

in Harlan Hill voting

FLORENCE, Ala. -- Henderson State quarterback Kevin Rodgers finished second in voting for the Harlan Hill Trophy as NCAA Division II college football player of the year.

Rodgers finished 143 votes, nine fewer than winner Jason Vander Lann of Ferris State. Vander Lann totaled 34 first-place votes, 20 seconds and 10 thirds in results announced Friday. Rodgers receives 29 first-place votes, 21 seconds and 14 thirds.

Anthony Bilal of Lake Erie finished third with 61 votes and Anthony Abernoja of Pittsburg State fourth with 60 votes. Abernoja and the Pittsburg State Gorillas defeated Great American Conference runner-up Harding in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Rodgers, Capital One Academic All-America Division II Player of the Year, was a Harlon Hill finalist for the third time, finishing sixth in 2012 as a sophomore and third last year as a junior.

A graduate student from Rockwall, Texas, Rodgers was named GAC offensive player of the year for the third-straight season. He completed 283 of 427 passes (66.2 percent) for 3,602 yards, ranking second nationally in touchdown passes with 34 and topping the 300-yard mark seven times.

Rodgers is fifth in NCAA Division II history for career passing yards (13,678) and is third in career touchdown passes (124). He also set GAC and Arkansas career records for passing yards, total offense and touchdowns.

Rodgers quarterbacked the Reddies to back-to-back GAC championships in 2012 and 2013. HSU finished 8-2 this year, third in the conference, with home losses to Harding and Ouachita Baptist.

Fountain Lake hosts

two-day hoops classic

Cutter Morning Star plays a doubleheader against Perryville to open the Fountain Lake Classic basketball tournament today.

The CMS-Perryville girls game at Bass Gymnasium starts at 2 p.m. After the CMS-Perryville boys game, Fountain Lake faces Harmony Grove in the last two games, the girls' tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.

Monday's four games feature doubleheaders between CMS and Harmony Grove (girls first at 4 p.m.) and Fountain Lake against Perryville.
