Ethan Stevens, a fifth-grade student at Cutter Morning Star Elementary School, won the school's geographic bee to advance to the state competition.

Stevens won the contest on Dec. 10 to move one step closer to the chance for a $50,000 college scholarship. He now advances to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors, a news release said.

The top-scoring students on the written test will qualify for the Arkansas State National Geographic Bee on March 27. The state competition will be held on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

The National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for the 27th year. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible in the thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world.

All school champions are eligible to win the national championship and its first-place prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national championship May 11-13, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
