Haley Whitaker, front left, placed first in the Hot Springs Village Animal Welfare League's 2014 Student Essay Contest. Whitaker was awarded the first-place prize of $100. The essay competition is an annual event open to all third-grade students from Fountain Lake, Jessieville and Mountain Pine elementary schools. The winners were recognized in assemblies at their respective schools. Rachel Vice, front right, placed third and received $25. Literacy teacher Kristy Riggs, back left, received a gift card for Home Plate Cafe. Also pictured is Molly Anne Lashmett of the AWL.
