Gargano qualifies for Boys Nation

Marco Gargano, a senior at Lakeside High School, was one of two students elected by more than 600 students at Arkansas Boys State to attend the American Legion Boys Nation this week in Washington, D.C.

Gargano was appointed as the secretary of state's aide by newly elected Secretary of State Nimit Ganhi and both made a trip to the state Capitol to work in the secretary of state's office. He is the son of Joe and Penny Gargano, of Hot Springs.

The 74th annual session of Arkansas American Legion Boys State was held May 25-30 on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. According to Craig DePew, Boys State media relations coordinator, at least 300 students picked up an application for Boys Nation.

The week began with all interested students applying in their respective Boys State county. Junior and senior counselors interviewed each applicant and selected two students to represent their county in the next round.

The second round consisted of 16 delegates from the eight counties who endured a strenuous interview process. They met with a panel of former Boys Nation delegates and senior staff, including the Arkansas Boys State Commission Chairman Len Cotton.

The panel selected the top four to the final round. Gargano was joined in the top four by John Gairhan, from Cabot; Kerim Gales, from Har-Ber; and Dean Patterson, from Little Rock Central.

The candidates presented a speech to the entire group of Boys State delegates explaining why they should be voted as the next Boys Nation senators. Gargano and Gairhan were elected by the student delegation.

Boys Nation began on Friday and will last through Saturday.
