Students in grades 9-12 who would like to learn to play an instrument or sharpen their playing and singing skills can take part in the Blues in the School program.

Local musicians have offered to share their musical knowledge with the attendees in a small group setting with a focus on the blues genre.

Afternoons will be filled with music and fun from 2-5 p.m. on July 30, 31 and Aug. 1 at National Park Community College in the Southside Student Center.

Following the three-day "kickoff camp," those attending will meet once a week to practice because they have already been asked to perform in August at Back to School Blues at Hot Springs Mall, on Labor Day weekend at the Hot Springs Blues Festival, in September at Bismarck Bar-B-Que Bash, and in the spring as the entertainment for Garland County has Talent.

Participants will explore how this root music is the basis of what they listen to today and they will learn to play patterns associated with the "blues sound."

Each day a speaker will share a little history about a song, a style of music, or the genre in general.

Those participating will be asked to choose an area of interest, such as guitar, drums, harmonica or running the sound. Participants will bring their own instruments, if they have one. If not, organizers will do their best to provide one for them.

Each instrument group will be given the same songs to learn.

After about an hour of working in the instrument group, everyone will come together and jam on the songs they worked on in the group sessions.

Registration through July 29 is available at http://wwwspacityblues.org.

There is no charge for the program. A performance shirt is approximately $15.
