Dear editor: NRA is problem

Dear editor:

I just read Larry Bauer's letter about gun violence being a Democratic problem. I was born and raised in Chicago and lived there for 52 years. Gun violence has no political favorite. The source of the problem is the NRA and not Democrats.

The NRA has too many people believing that gun control is the first step in removing all of our guns from society, and it has a stranglehold on our government. This is pure hog wash! It is far too easy to get a gun in this country.

Larry seems to be mostly interested in inner city crime, but totally ignores the rash of mass murders in our schools, workplaces, and shopping and entertainment areas. Gun crime in Chicago has been a problem under Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and now Barack Obama. It is a nonpartisan problem.

Hot Springs is a relatively small urban area and yet guns are stolen out of cars and homes here at an alarming rate. Those guns go directly to those who are committing these street crimes. Gun laws that promote tougher background checks and that require owners to secure their guns when not in use would go a long ways to reducing this type of crime in our country. We do have too many people on welfare but look at the U.K. They have high unemployment but no guns. They do not have a gun crime problem, do they?
