Centerpoint routs Horatio for first win

HORATIO -- One team had to get its first win, and Centerpoint left no doubt.

Sophomore quarter Keenan Owens three touchdown passes, and the Knights' defense dominated in a 35-0 rout of Horatio Friday night in a 3A-5 matchup. Both teams went in 0-4.

"It was just what we needed," Centerpoint coach Cary Rogers said. "It just took us awhile. We've preached effort and patience. I didn't know how long it would take to start jelling."

The Knights took the lead in the first quarter on Owens' 30-yard pass to Lance Chambers. Owens tossed a two-yarder to Cameron Clower in the second, and Cesar Roman added a 21-yard field goal for a 16-0 halftime lead.

Owens hit Logan Taylor for a 55-yard score in the third quarter, and Jared Graves broke a 65-yard touchdown run later in the period. Clower added a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Taylor Bailey contributed an interception to the shutout, Rogers also noting the play of end Cesar Valdez and tackle Daniel Henthorn.

Centerpoint next plays Little Rock Episcopal at home.

Poyen-Magnet Cove

POYEN -- In a 2A-5 stunner, Poyen scored 20 first-quarter points and held visiting Magnet Cove scoreless until the last play of a 40-7 romp.

Five interceptions were part of the Panthers' rough outing.

"It was their day," Magnet Cove coach Ronnie Efird said. "Everything went right, and everything went wrong for us."

Magnet Cove (3-2, 1-1 in conference) edged Poyen 7-6 last en route to s share of the 2A-5 title.

"I was worried about this game," Efird said. "They jumped on us in the first quarter, and we just never regrouped. ... We were never in the ball game. They've got a good football team. They've got big linemen, and big linemen give us problems."

The Panthers, whose touchdown came on Harrison Wade's five-yard pass to Tanner Clements, play Quitman this week at home.

Mena-Malvern

MENA -- Sage Kesterson ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, and surprising Mena remained unbeaten with a 36-22 win over visiting Malvern.

Kesterson scored on of five- and two-yard runs and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Dougherty, who also ran 10 yards for a score. David Hatfield scored on a 53-yard fumble return for Mena (5-0, 2-0 4A-7).

Jamari McCollum scored three touchdowns for Malvern (3-2, 1-1).

Arkadelphia-Waldron

ARKADELPHIA -- Jeff Blake threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Arkadelphia did all its scoring in the first half of a 42-0 rout of winless Waldron.

Blake went 7 for 9 passing for 93 yards and ran six times for 119 yards. He threw two 12-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter and scored on a 33-yard run in the second quarter.

Alex Buckley added 21- and two-yard touchdown runs for Arkadelphia (4-1, 1-1 in 4A-7), which also scored on Adrian Barrett's interception return.

The Badgers play next at Fountain Lake.

BHG-Bismarck

BISMARCK -- Jon Johnson ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns in Benton Harmony Grove's 34-0 defeat of host Bismarck.

Harry McClendon added 98 rushing yards and two scores for the Cardinals (4-1, 2-0 in 3A-5). Brinson Cornwell made two interceptions.

Bismarck (2-3, 0-2) plays next at Glen Rose.

Elsewhere:

• Camden Fairview stopped White Hall's Courtney Anderson on a two-point conversion run with 57 seconds left, and the Cardinals held on for 34-33 win. Anderson's 6-yard run pulled the Bulldogs within a point.

• Zack Baxley's four-yard touchdown run with 2:40 left and Dustin Whitfield's extra point gave Bauxite a 14-13 victory over Ashdown. Ben Madison scored Bauxite's first touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

•Trevor Pipkin threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns in Prescott's 46-21 rout of Little Rock Episcopal in an early 3A-5 showdown. Curtis Toliver carried 16 times for 132 yards for the unbeaten Curey Wolves, who rolled up 548 yards. Episcopal's William McCastlain rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown.
