Great support of arts

Dear editor:

In little over a month, two notable events occurred, not just for me, but, I believe, for the people of Hot Springs. On Friday, Aug. 1, I was thrilled to attend the 25-year anniversary of Gallery Walk in Hot Springs. On Friday, Sept. 5, Blue Moon Art Gallery hosted their final reception with an impressive exhibition of works by Thad Flenniken. As an artist, I have shown downtown for over 14 years and with both instances, I was reminded of what can happen when a community truly supports the arts.

While considering these two events, I was struck by two thoughts I would like to share. First, the closing of the Blue Moon Gallery is a loss that will be felt by many. Bittersweet though the loss is, the final Gallery Walk and the subsequent show by Thad were and are a celebration and a classy and fitting tribute to their time on Central Avenue. As I said, I am an artist and I am proud to say that for every one of those 14 years I have been represented by the Blue Moon. They were my home gallery and they are my dear friends. I am confident when I say that many, many people felt the same and that no gallery walk was complete without a stop at the Blue Moon. Through the years Pat, Dishongh, Phil and Steve created a welcoming environment and a brilliant space for artists to show their work. No doubt they will be missed, but with equal assurance, Hot Springs will continue to thrive as a haven for the arts.

Secondly, and in an even more personal vein, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the city of Hot Springs, the other galleries and artists, and most especially the people and art lovers of this area who, from day one of my 14-year relationship, welcomed me with open arms. I have experienced the most wonderful support and encouragement all of these years and truly feel like an adopted son of the city. My future as an artist will take me to many other places, but I know that Hot Springs will forever hold a special place in my heart. Indeed, I look forward to continuing a presence in the art world of Hot Springs. This place and the people who make it so special are just too good to stay away from!

Sincerest thanks,
