Apparent drunken driver allegedly resists, flees from state police

A local man was arrested on multiple charges Sunday after allegedly driving drunk and briefly fleeing from an Arkansas State Police trooper who had to use his Taser on him at one point.

Anthony Lynn Robinson Jr., 35, who lists an address of 334 Sears Hollow Trail, was taken into custody around 4 p.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated, third offense, resisting arrest, fleeing, driving on a suspended driver's license, improper passing and possession of a controlled substance.

Robinson remained in custody Monday in lieu of bonds totaling $5,750 and is set to appear Sept. 22 in Garland County District Court.

According to reports, ASP Cpl. Brandon Cook was working near the Carpenter Dam exit of the King Expressway shortly after 3:30 p.m. when dispatch advised him of a reckless driver in a black Dodge Nitro headed west on Highway 70 east.

He responded and was on Highway 70 headed east when he spotted the suspect vehicle in the westbound lane near where 70 begins to split into four lanes, but the driver was already passing cars in the one-lane area.

He activated his lights and siren and turned around to go after the vehicle, but had to wait a few moments for traffic. Cook states he quickly gained on the Nitro which turned onto the King Expressway at the last minute and increased its speed.

Cook had to wait again for traffic, but caught up to the suspect after about a mile. The driver, later identified as Robinson, refused to stop.

The trooper pulled up alongside him and pointed and yelled at him to pull over and the suspect "slowed down and acted like he was going to stop" but then sped up again and continued on.

After Cook again pulled beside him and told him to pull over the suspect finally complied and stopped.

Cook states he exited his unit and went to the rear passenger side of the suspect vehicle with his gun drawn and ordered the suspect out of the vehicle. The suspect got out with his hands up, but then turned his back on the trooper.

He finally turned back around facing Cook, he states, and advanced toward him yelling, "Just shoot me! Shoot!"

At that point, Cook states he didn't see any weapons in the suspect's hands so he pulled out his Taser and used it on the suspect. The suspect continued to resist until he was shocked a second time and then finally stopped.

Robinson was taken into custody and three field sobriety tests were administered which he reportedly failed. He submitted to a breathalyzer test which registered his blood-alcohol content at 0.19 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

In searching the suspect's vehicle, Cook allegedly located a bottle of generic Prozac that was prescribed to a woman.
