Artist wants haiku for art piece

Monticello artist Alice Guffy Miller is looking for haiku to be immortalized on a sculpture that she has been commissioned to do for the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library and Learning Center in Little Rock.

The theme is "Imagine Peace," which is the name of the 9-foot metal tree she is fabricating for installation at the library later this fall.

There will be 14 leaves on the tree that will have a different haiku inscribed on each one. Anyone who wishes to submit a haiku is welcome to do so.

"I am hoping people will send me haiku that is accompanied by some form of art such as drawings or photos," Miller said.

"While I can only use 14 haiku for the tree, all poems submitted will be bound in a book that will be kept at the library as part of the installation."

A haiku is a three-line, 17-syllable poem with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five syllables in the third line.

All submissions must be received by Sept. 27 and may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Alice Guffy Miller, 594 W. Conrad Avenue, Monticello, AR 71655.

Any submission accompanied by art must be sent by mail.
