School election today

Polls are open today for contested school board races in three local districts in the annual school election.

Polling locations are open today from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for contested seats in Hot Springs, Jessieville and Mountain Pine. Polls are also open in Fountain Lake, in which two candidates are running unopposed for two seats.

Cutter Morning Star, Lake Hamilton and Lakeside requested only early and absentee voting in their districts. All three have uncontested races for one seat each.

Two seats in the Hot Springs district are up for vote.

Debbie Ugbade is seeking a fifth consecutive term on the board in Position 2. Former paraprofessional Myra Young, who worked in the district for 17 years, is also running for Position 2.

Karen Reese is seeking election to the board for the first time. Reese was twice appointed to Position 3 in 2013. Chris Skrivanos, a drug court counselor, is also seeking the Position 3 seat.

Sindy Webb originally filed to run for Position 3 and her name remains on the ballot. She removed herself from consideration earlier this month and endorsed Skrivanos. She has since served as Young's campaign manager.

Hot Springs voting will be held at the Jones School building, 400 Linwood Ave., for precincts 1A, C, D, T, U, V; 2A, B, C, D, E, F, H; 3B, F, G, H, M, N, P, R; 3S, T, U, V, W, X, Y; 4A, B, F, J, M, N, C, D, E; 5D, E, S, B, 5C, A; 6S, A, B; and 12J.

The Position 2 seat will be up for vote in 2015. Board member Mike Semmler, who sits in the Position 1 seat, submitted his resignation effective Wednesday.

Steve Garrett is seeking election in Position 3 after being appointed to the board last fall. He is running against Nicholas Sarver, owner of the Village Shell Service Station. Two years remain in the five-year term.

Chris Robertson was appointed to Position 5 earlier this year and is now seeking election to that seat. Sam Ault, a plant manager for C.J. Horner Co. Inc. and a pastor, is running against Robertson. The winning candidate will serve the remaining four years of the term.

Unitarian Universalist Village Church, 403 Barcelona Road, is open for votes cast in precincts 11K-1, 2, 3, and 13A. Saline County residents in the district cast their votes at Balboa Baptist Church, 415 Ponce de Leon Drive.

Voting in Mountain Pine is in the school auditorium, 710 Blakely Dam Road.

Sheila Ford and Greg Frank are unopposed for two at-large seats on the Fountain Lake School Board. The three-year terms of Frank and John Lands end this month. Lands did not file for re-election.
