Town hall meeting to discuss Internet service in HSV

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- A town hall meeting to discuss high-speed Internet service in Hot Springs Village will be held from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 7 at Coronado Center.

Gerald Allen, vice chairman of the Property Owners' Association's Governmental Affairs Committee, said Villagers can share their high-speed Internet experiences and needs at the meeting.

"Before we push forward with new options and technologies, we'd like to find out what the public thinks about the service they're receiving today, what they'd like to be receiving and what they think of what they're paying," said Allen, who heads GAC's utilities subcommittee.

Concern about slow Internet service and an inability to get it in all parts of the Village was discussed last May at the POA board of directors' annual retreat.

High-speed Internet service is becoming a utility as essential as electricity and water, the board was told. In addition to communications and entertainment, it is becoming more important in business, health care and education. Forecasts predict it will be the backbone of operating myriad household devices in the near future.

Having affordable high-speed Internet service in all the Village was also described as critical to marketing efforts to attract new residents to the community.

The Federal Communications Committee said earlier this year the average speed of Internet service in the U.S. is 21.2 megabits per second.
