Bismarck rallies, stuns CMS 34-28

BISMARCK -- Bismarck scored two second-half touchdowns and handed Cutter Morning Star its first defeat of the season Friday night, 34-28 at Doyle Henderson Field.

Nick Stancil plunged two yards for a touchdown and ran for the two-point conversion that set the final margin with 3:28 left in the third quarter. Holding CMS scoreless for the last 15:28 of clock time, Bismarck matched the 2-1 season record of CMS in the last nonconference game for both teams.

Andrew Bennett passed 60 yards to Zack Wren for a 28-26 CMS lead with 6:54 left in the third quarter, the conversion attempt failing. That erased a 26-22 lead Bismarck gained on Ramirez' five-yard run with 8:07 on the third-period clock.

Going three for three on conversions, CMS led 22-20 at halftime, the Eagles stopping a two-point conversion attempt after Ramirez went over from three yards out with 44.2 seconds before the break.

Wren scored on a four-yard run in the first quarter and returned a second-quarter kickoff 85 yards, J.D. Simmons kicking both conversions for a 14-6 CMS lead with 6:02 left in the half. Bismarck scored on Stancil's 25-yard run, the conversion failing and Wren returning the ensuing kickoff for his second of three touchdowns on the night. Zack Roberts sneaked one yard and passed to Cole McSwain for a tying two-point conversion with 3:16 on the clock.

CMS answered quickly with Jeremy Casey's 30-yard touchdown run and Bennett tacking on the two-point conversion.

In conference openers next week, Bismarck (3A-5) goes to Glen Rose and CMS (2A-5) is home against Poyen. The Eagles came off home wins over Horatio and Drew Central, while Bismarck had beaten Spring Hall at home and lost at Poyen.
