Eliminate overhead

Dear editor:

I just watched a story on KATV about how the state is $65 million short of fully funding all of the school districts in the state. If the rest of the state looks like it does here, I can understand. Here in Garland County, within a 25-mile radius, we have seven school districts and that includes two inside the city limits of Hot Springs! We have Jessieville, Mountain Pine, Lake Hamilton, Fountain lake, Cutter Morning Star, Hot Springs and Lakeside. Each of these districts has a superintendent, his staff, as well as a board. Most of them, I assume, carry a salary.

That is an extraordinary amount of money that could be used elsewhere for things like teachers, textbooks and computers. I am not advocating eliminating the schools, just the district overhead. We could have two school districts, Garland County and Hot Springs.
