Steelers handle Panthers for costly victory

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ben Roethlisberger threw two 7-yard touchdown passes to Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell ran for 147 yards and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 37-19 on Sunday night.

The Steelers had gone eight quarters without a touchdown before Roethlisberger's two scoring strikes in the third. They were set up by Cam Newton's fumble and Bell's 81-yard run.

Roethlisberger finished 22 of 30 for 196 yards, and Brown had 90 yards receiving on 10 catches to help the Steelers (2-1) snap Carolina's eight-game home winning streak.

LaGarrette Blount ran for 118 yards and the Steelers outrushed the Panthers 264-42.

The Panthers were looking for their first 3-0 start since 2003 -- the year they went to the Super Bowl.

The Steelers lost defensive starters Ike Taylor, Ryan Shazier and Jarvis Jones to injuries.

Cowboys still have

questions on defense

IRVING, Texas -- Coach Jason Garrett is still having to answer questions about the Dallas Cowboys defense.

A day after the biggest regulation comeback in team history, Garrett was asked Monday about the defense, particularly third-year cornerback Morris Claiborne.

Claiborne was beaten for two touchdowns before his late interception in the 34-31 victory at St. Louis, where the Cowboys overcame a 21-0 deficit.

Garrett would not say whether Claiborne's starting job was in jeopardy, and whether the interception that ended the Rams' last threat made up for the earlier mistakes.

Rams rookie Austin Davis threw for 327 yards Sunday in his second NFL start.

This week, Dallas (2-1) is home against the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees, who last year threw for 392 yards and four TDs against the Cowboys.

Lions' Tulloch tears ACL

during sack celebration

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL he suffered while celebrating a sack.

Tulloch injured his knee in the first quarter of Detroit's 19-7 victory over Green Bay on Sunday. He returned to action shortly after but was unable to continue playing, spending the remainder of the game on the sidelines.

Coach Jim Caldwell would not speculate Monday about who will replace Tulloch, though linebacker DeAndre Levy finished the game in Tulloch's absence.

Caldwell also said the team has released rookie kicker Nate Freese, who missed a 41-yard field goal Sunday and was just 3 for 7 on the year. He will be replaced with kicker Alex Henery, who worked out for the Lions last week.

Redskins lose Hall,

Ihenacho for year

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall has a ruptured left Achilles and is done for the season.

The Redskins also lost safety Duke Ihenacho for the year with a left foot injury.

The team placed both players on injured reserve Monday. Cornerback Chase Minnifield was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

Hall and Ihenacho were hurt in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chargers' Woodhead

done for season

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers coach Mike McCoy said running back Danny Woodhead has a broken lower right leg and will miss the rest of the season.

Woodhead was hurt on the first drive of the Chargers' 22-10 win at Buffalo. He was stopped after a 1-yard gain by diving defensive tackle Kyle Williams. Williams hit Woodhead directly in the right ankle, which appeared to twist underneath the player.

Woodhead has been a big contributor to the Chargers since he joined them before the 2013 season.

With Ryan Mathews out for several weeks with a knee injury, McCoy says he and general manager Tom Telesco will decide later Monday how to go about adding a running back. Donald Brown, who carried 31 times for 62 yards, and rookie Branden Oliver are the only healthy backs on the roster.

Home of 49ers'

McDonald burglarized

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Authorities are investigating a weekend burglary at the home of San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald.

Police Sgt. Heather Randol said Monday that someone broke into McDonald's San Jose home and stole several personal items late Saturday night. No arrests have been made.

McDonald was in Arizona last weekend preparing for the 49ers' game against the Cardinals. The Cardinals beat the 49ers 23-14 Sunday.

McDonald is still waiting to hear from Santa Clara County prosecutors on whether he will face any charges in connection with his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence at his home on Aug. 31. McDonald lives at the address with his fiancee.

Several prominent politicians in California have called on the team to bench McDonald because of the allegations.
