Direct energy elsewhere

Dear editor:

I am compelled to write this letter in response to Lloyd Hoffman's continuous criticism of the practice of yoga, which is a health and wellness program. Let me say first, that I am sad for Mr. Hoffman in that this is of what his life consists. All his energy, conviction and passion should be directed at more important "causes," such as volunteering in the community. Second, I am so very thankful for yoga in my life. I suffer from migraine headaches and sciatica. My chiropractor, who is Christian by the way, told me that yoga is the best exercise I can do for both of these medical issues.

Some yoga benefits are: self-focus, which is so very important to everyone, but especially to those who are caregivers (which I am). There's relaxation and stress reduction (again, wonderful for us caregivers). Yoga improves strength, flexibility and balance, all of which deteriorate as we age. You have improved stamina and think more clearly.

Mr. Hoffman, please take your obsession and channel it to a more important cause. In closing I say to you, "namaste" which means "The best in me salutes the best in you."
