Music Club presents afternoon of opera

Hot Springs Music Club, a member of the Arkansas and National Federations of Music Clubs, will present "Opera in the Afternoon" at 3 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church, 1100 Central Ave.

The program is open to the public and free of charge.

Performers will be vocal students from Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University.

HSU students are Milton Moren, bass, Kaitlyn Mahaffey, soprano, and Matthew Walker, countertenor, students of Laura Storm, and Jordan Murdock, baritenor, student of Bill Higgins.

OBU students are Tori Clark, mezzo-soprano, student of Robin Williams, Seth Russell, baritone, student of Jon Secrest, Jillian Turner, soprano, student of Glenda Secrest, and Todd McNeel, bass-baritone, student of David Stanley.

Tori Clark and Matthew Walker are former Hot Springs Music Club Scholarship winners.

John Briggs, Gay Smith, and Hunter Mabery will accompany the students.

The program will consist of pieces from OBU's upcoming opera "The Mikado."

Also, there will be selections from operas "Herodiade," by Massenet, "Little Women," by Adamo, "Le Nozze di Figaro," by Mozart, "Porgy and Bess," by Gershwin, "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," by Rossini, "La Sonnambula," by Bellini, "Messiah," by Handel, "Medium," by Menotti, and "Morgen! (Tomorrow)," by Strauss.
