Would-be burglar faces child endangerment charge, left child in vehicle

A man allegedly caught breaking into an area business early Saturday was soon facing additional charges for leaving a 7-year-old boy alone in his car.

Jimmy Lee Womack, 36, who lists an address of 601 Higdon Ferry Road, K-247, was taken into custody shortly before 3 a.m. and charged with felony counts of breaking or entering, endangering the welfare of a minor and possession of a controlled substance, each punishable by up to six years in prison.

Womack, who also had a warrant for failure to appear, remained in custody Monday in lieu of bonds totaling $8,420 and is set to appear Oct. 7 in Garland County District Court.

According to the affidavit, shortly after 2:30 a.m., Hot Springs police Officer Rushing responded to the parking lot of Relyance Bank, 4446 Central Ave., regarding an abandoned vehicle with a child left inside and arrived to find a silver Pontiac Grand Am in the lot with the driver's door open and a 7-year-old boy sleeping in the back seat.

He and other officers began searching the area for the driver and HSPD Sgt. M. Willis reportedly found a suspect, later identified as Womack, attempting to break into the offices of Southland Auto Wholesale, located next door at 4436 Central, and took him into custody.

Womack told police he was watching the child for his girlfriend, who was in the hospital.

Once at the detention center, Womack was searched and a baggie with what later tested positive for methamphetamine was reportedly found in his pants pocket.

• Officers responding to a possible peeping Tom incident ended up arresting a local woman on felony and misdemeanor drug charges Friday morning.

Dawna Michelle Cash, 29, of 307 Linwood St., was taken into custody near her residence shortly before 10 a.m. and charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, punishable by up to one year in jail.

She was later released on $6,000 bond and is set to appear Oct. 7 in district court.

According to reports, shortly before 9:30 a.m., HSPD Officer J. Anaya responded to the area of Linwood and Kenwood streets regarding a complaint about a man and woman wearing dark clothing sitting in a tree with binoculars.

He located the two suspects, including the woman identified as Cash, behind Cash's residence and noted Cash was holding the binoculars. The officer also noted a strong odor of marijuana and when he asked Cash about it she admitted to smoking and handed him a pipe.

She was taken into custody and in searching her purse and other belongings the officer allegedly found a coin purse with three empty baggies, one baggie with 1 gram of suspected marijuana, another baggie with 1.3 grams of suspected meth, and a second bag with 4.1 grams of suspected meth.

He reportedly located a second coin purse with more marijuana and a second pipe. He also found a credit card allegedly taken in an earlier burglary incident, but that was still under investigation.

Once at the detention center, deputies reportedly found another baggie of marijuana, about 4 grams, in Cash's bra.
