Wilson awarded ATU scholarship

RUSSELLVILLE -- Lakeside High School senior Sam Wilson has received a Distinguished Scholars award from Arkansas Tech University beginning with the fall 2015 semester.

Wilson plans to major in Engineering. He is the son of Tim and Angie Wilson.

Wilson is president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Beta club, three-year letterman in football, named to the 2014 All-Conference football team and maintains a 4.0 grade point average. He previously signed a letter of intent to play football at Tech.

Henderson to host G60 for entrepreneurs

ARKADELPHIA -- Aspiring entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and win $1,000 April 23 at Henderson State University.

The School of Business is hosting a Gone in 60 Seconds event where contestants will have 60 seconds to convince the judges and audience that their idea is best.

Anyone can compete and there is no charge to make a pitch or attend. Contestants and the audience are asked to register at eventbrite.com/e/g60-pitch-contest-arkadelphia-tickets-16205901287.

The event will start at 6 p.m. in the Garrison Center Grand Ballroom.

Two $1,000 prizes will be awarded. One award will be based on an audience vote and the other will be chosen by the judges.

The format of the G60 contest is similar to the popular television series "Shark Tank," where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of investors.

Erickson named geo bee semifinalist

Lake Hamilton Junior High eighth-grader Jordan Erickson was named an Arkansas National Geographic State Bee semifinalist by the National Geographic Society.

Erickson was made eligible to compete in the 2015 Arkansas National Geographic Bee March 27 at Conway Junior High. He is the son of Mandy Farmer and Carl Erickson.

SAU STEM hosting free female workshop

MAGNOLIA -- The Southern Arkansas University STEM Center for K-12 Education has been awarded a grant from the Arkansas STEM Coalition to provide a one-day, hands-on science and engineering STEM leadership workshop for female students ranging from 10th grade in high school through college sophomores.

The "Women Can-Do Attitude" STEM Workshop at SAU will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the SAU Science Center on May 2. Pre-registration is required, and is available online at https://web.saumag.edu/science/stem/workshop-registration/. Pre-registration will close on April 25.

Registration is free, but is limited to 50 participants. Parent or teacher chaperones for high school students are requested for every six students from a school. Lunch and snacks will be provided for the students and the chaperones.

The students will experience engaging, hands-on science, technology, engineering, mathematics activities in small groups, in a university setting taught by university faculty and upper-level students.

Rhythm at the Runway returns Saturday

The 5th Annual Rhythm at the Runway Car and Truck Show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hot Springs Memorial Field, 525 Airport Road.

Registration will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Judging will be based on a 100-point system. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m.

First, second and third place in each division will be recognized. Specialty trophies and people's choice awards will also be presented.

Divisions of Old School Cars are arranged by time periods of pre-1950, 1951-1966, 1967-1982 and 1983-1998.

New School Cars are vehicles from 1999-2015. Street Rods are pre-1950.

Old School Trucks are sorted into time periods of pre-1950, 1951-1971 and 1972-1992. New School Trucks are vehicles made in 1993 or later. Only first place will be recognized in the Rat Rod Division.

The pre-entry fee is $15. The entry cost on the day of the show is $20. "Goody bags" will be available for the first 100 entries. Prize drawings will be held throughout the day.

The Fountain Lake Cobra Band will perform at noon. All proceeds will benefit the band.
