Local man allegedly holds Jehovah's Witness at gunpoint

A teenage Jehovah's Witness reportedly found himself at gunpoint while conducting door to door ministry earlier this month, and the suspect was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree assault.

Jerry Duane Stewart, 49, who listed a Mount Caramel Road address, was taken into custody on a $1,000 bond. He is due in district court May 5, according to Garland County sheriff's reports.

On April 6, the victim, 17, was in the Mount Carmel Road area and knocked on the door of a residence to deliver his ministry. According to the affidavit, a male came out of the side door of the house and while the victim was looking down he felt something against his temple. He looked up and saw the suspect holding a pistol.

The suspect, later identified as Stewart, allegedly backed away from the victim and pointed the gun toward him. When the victim asked if he did anything wrong, Stewart told him he had 10 seconds to leave and started counting. According to the report, the victim apologized to Stewart for bothering him but Stewart continued counting. The victim then left the property.

On April 10, the victim identified Stewart after seeing a photo of him at the Garland County Sheriff's Office.
