USTA tennis tourney set in HSV next week

Eight tennis teams from host Hot Springs Village are among those from 10 states entered in the Riser Ford Multi-States Championships April 30-May 3 at Coronado Center.

Entries have increased from seven teams in 2013 to 39 this year, 16 from Arkansas. Louisiana has six entries, Tennessee five, Georgia four, Oklahoma three, Mississippi two and Alabama, Kansas, Missouri and Texas one each.

Barbara and Chuck Skarshaug are co-chairmen for the United States Tennis Association-sanctioned event. Last year's tournament, with 28 teams, brought in more than $16,000 to Hot Springs Village.

"We are blessed to live in a community of tennis players who are proud of their home and are willing to step up and volunteer in order to showcase what is available to residents and visitors," said Barbara Skarshaug.

Play is expected to begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, continuing through Sunday.

Baseball:

Hot Springs-LR Mills

LITTLE ROCK -- Hot Springs' baseball team collected its second win of the season Monday in run-rule fashion, 11-1 over Little Rock Mills in five innings.

The Trojans (2-8) tallied three runs in the first, four in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth. Mills scored in the before Walker Glisson settled in to throw five solid innings.

Glisson allowed two hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out three. He also helped his cause by scoring a run.

Max Harris and Bryan Rosberg led Hot Springs with 2-for-3 games, Harris walking once and scoring twice and Rosberg scoring three times. Andrew Best reached base three times on a hit and two errors, scoring once while driving in a pair of runs.

Hot Springs traveled to Watson Chapel on Tuesday for a 5A-South game.

ace at Glenwood CC

GLENWOOD -- John Morrow, of Little Rock, recently used a 9-iron to hit a hole-in-one on the 126-yard, par-3 No. 17 at Glenwood Country Club. Witnesses were Gordon Taylor, Tommy Hill and Susan Taylor.
