Cards lose to Brewers amid Wainwright loss

MILWAUKEE -- Adam Lind hit a two-run homer and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Sunday for just their second victory in the last 12 games.

Milwaukee, off to the worst start in team history, improved to 4-15. Every other team in the majors has at least six wins.

The Cardinals had won nine of 10. They headed back to St. Louis, where ace Adam Wainwright will have an MRI on Monday to see how long his injured Achilles and left ankle will sideline him -- there is speculation he could miss the rest of the season.

Cubs 5, Reds 2

CINCINNATI -- Rookie Addison Russell doubled with the bases loaded -- one of his best moments during his first week in the majors -- and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 5-2 victory on Sunday and a sweep of their rain-shortened series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 21-year-old second baseman was in a slump when he broke the game open with his three-run double in the fourth inning off Anthony DeSclafani (2-1). Miguel Montero had a solo homer and a run-scoring single off DeSclafani, who had a streak of 16 scoreless innings snapped.

The Reds have dropped three in a row overall. They went 0 for 20 with runners in scoring position during the two games against Chicago.

Pirates 8,

Diamondbacks 0

PHOENIX -- Francisco Liriano pitched effectively into the seventh inning in a combined three-hitter and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed their first sweep in Arizona with an 8-0 win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Making his 200th career start, Liriano (1-1) offset six walks with seven strikeouts and allowed two hits in 6 1-3 innings. He has now beaten 29 of the 30 teams in the majors.

Marlins 6, Nationals 2

MIAMI -- Adeiny Hechavarria hit a bases-loaded triple after a botched rundown kept the inning alive, and the Miami Marlins completed their first three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals since May 2012 by winning 6-2 Sunday.

The Marlins earned their fifth consecutive victory after a 3-11 start. The defending NL East champion Nationals (7-12) lost their fifth game in a row -- their longest skid since July 2013 -- and fell behind Miami into fourth place in the division.

Giancarlo Stanton hit an RBI triple off the top lip of the center field wall, reached on an infield single and scored twice. Miami hit three triples in a game for the first time since 2000.

Padres 3, Dodgers 1

SAN DIEGO -- Brandon Morrow pitched seven strong innings to earn his first win with San Diego and Alexi Amarista and Derek Norris homered as the Padres beat the NL-West leading Dodgers 3-1 Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

A night after the Padres allowed four home runs, Morrow gave up only one longball, a leadoff shot in the fifth by Alex Guerrero. The rookie has five homers and 13 RBIs since making his season debut on April 11.

Morrow (1-0), signed as a free agent, held the Dodgers to one run and five hits. He had no-decisions in his first three starts.

Phillies 5, Braves 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Ryan Howard hit his second homer in three games, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Sunday.

Howard's miserable season had already cost him his cleanup spot in the order, and he entered the game batting .189. Howard hit a two-run homer on Friday and a three-run shot in the first inning against Trevor Cahill (0-3) on Sunday.

American League

Rangers 5, Angels 4 (11)

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Leonys Martin led off the 11th inning with a homer and the Texas Rangers scored another run on Erick Aybar's error then held on for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday to end a three-game skid.

Jose Alvarez (0-1), working his second inning of relief, fell behind Martin 3-0 before the Rangers' leadoff hitter drove a full-count pitch barely over the 18-foot wall in right field for his first homer of the season and 16th in 1,121 big league at-bats.

Aybar soon after made his second error of the game, misplaying a grounder in the hole by Elvis Andrus. The Angels got a run in the bottom half on Aybar's RBI single before Rangers closer Neftali Feliz threw a called third strike past Grant Green to end it.

White Sox 3, Royals 2

White Sox 5, Royals 3

CHICAGO -- Conor Gillaspie hit a two-run single in Chicago's five-run sixth inning, and the White Sox rallied to beat Kansas City 5-3 for their second win against the Royals on Sunday.

The day began with Avisail Garcia's two-out RBI single sending Chicago to a 3-2 victory in the resumption of a game suspended by rain on Friday night. Then an error on Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas helped the White Sox chase Edinson Volquez on the way to just their second win in six games this season against the Royals.

John Danks (1-2) pitched six innings of three-run ball while improving to 8-1 in 18 career starts against Kansas City. David Robertson (2-0) got three outs for his third save in three opportunities after he tossed a scoreless inning for the win in the suspended game.

Twins 4, Mariners 2 (11)

SEATTLE -- Joe Mauer hit a two-run triple with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting the Minnesota Twins over the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Sunday.

Mauer got three hits and drove in three runs. In addition to his first triple of the season, he had an RBI double as the Twins won for the third time in four games.

Astros 7, Athletics 6

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Evan Gattis hit a two-run double in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros completed their first sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 7-6 win Sunday.

Gattis matched a career high with four RBIs. His go-ahead double with one out came after the A's intentionally walked Jed Lowrie to load the bases.

Gattis lined a 1-2 pitch from Tyler Clippard (0-2) to the deepest part of the field at O.co Coliseum, and center fielder Sam Fuld stumbled while chasing the ball in the air.

Rays 5, Blue Jays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Chris Archer pitched two-hit ball in seven scoreless innings and Brandon Guyer drove in four runs Sunday as the Tampa Bay Rays won their fifth straight, 5-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Archer (3-2) became the first American League pitcher to go four starts within one season without giving up an earned run since Zach Greinke did it for Kansas City in 2009.

Archer gave up an unearned run in a 1-0 loss to Boston on Tuesday, but he has not given up an earned run since opening day, a span of 26 2-3 innings. His ERA is 0.84.

Tigers 8, Indians 6

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 8-6 Sunday.

Orioles 18, Red Sox 7

BALTIMORE -- Delmon Young drove in five runs, Chris Davis homered and the Baltimore Orioles received a bounce-back pitching performance from Bud Norris in an 18-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Baltimore took control with a six-run third inning and led 12-0 in the sixth. Davis, Jimmy Paredes and Steve Pearce each contributed three RBIs to the Orioles' second straight win following a five-game skid.

It was Baltimore's most prolific offensive showing since an 18-9 win over Cleveland on April 19, 2006, and the most runs the Orioles ever scored against Boston.
