OBU to host award-winning guest pianist in free concert

ARKADELPHIA -- Ouachita Baptist University will host guest pianist Hie-Yon Choi for a concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mabee Fine Arts Center's McBeth Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

Choi will perform a selection of Ludwig van Beethoven's sonatas. "I expect it to be a wonderful recital, especially for people who enjoy classical piano music and the music of Beethoven," Cai Lei, OBU associate professor of music, said in a news release.

A professor of piano at the Seoul National University in Korea, Choi has won many national and international prizes, including the Busoni in Italy, the Kapell in the United States, Clara Haskil in Switzerland and Maria Callas in Athens. Her recordings include "Six Grand Etudes on Paganini" by Franz Liszt and the complete études of Frédéric Chopin.

Her most recent work includes the performance of Beethoven's complete 32 sonatas. Choi studied with Gyorgy Sebok at Indiana University and Hans Leygraf in Berlin. She frequently gives master classes in Korea, Germany and the U.S.

She also will serve as a guest judge for OBU's annual Virginia Queen Piano Competition, to be held Friday.
