Technology hits and misses

Technology has come a long way in the past century.

The first vehicles that bore across our nation came in any color you wanted, as long as you wanted black, but now some of them drive themselves. In two generations, we've gone from party lines to smartphones that can perform a dizzying array of tasks.

And there is even this little wheeled device that will vacuum your floor for you.

Amazing. But not everything has advanced as far as we would like.

We still don't have jet-packs or teleportation or whatever it was those guys on "Star Trek" did. Maybe that's a good thing. It didn't work out too well in "The Fly."

Other things have somewhat failed us, too . Going to the dentist is still a pain in the neck . er . mouth. Is there anything more useless than a boat motor that won't start?

A lawn mower, maybe.

We've yet to see a real set of those "no-tangle" booster cables. There may be a pill for almost every ailment under the sun, but the list of potential side effects makes us wonder if the ailment is something we can live with.

Microwave popcorn. It's an abomination compared to the real thing -- movie theater popcorn.

Coffee-makers. They used to get passed down generation to generation. Nowadays, if they last through basketball season, you've feel like you've gotten your money's worth.

Not really, but you understand the point.

Plastic bumpers on vehicles that cost a thousand bucks to replace when we used to be able to get by with a hammer and some Bondo.

A buggy computer. Makes you wish you had that hammer handy.
