HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Sometimes volunteers just have to get their hands into a job, which is what Hot Springs Village Players Florence Davis and Maureen Godfrey have been doing recently. The two were assigned the task of painting theatrical backgrounds, called flats.

But what can be done when the paint is lumpy and running low? Davis decided to sieve the paint through an old shirt to remove the lumps, then wring out the fabric to conserve just enough paint to cover the flat. This is a great example of theater conservation in action.

Several teams have already been working hard on the beginning stages of the spooky, funny set construction and decoration for "Young Frankenstein," the musical, which will be presented during Halloween weekend in HSV's Woodlands Auditorium, 1101 DeSoto Blvd. They will soon be joined by set construction manager Dan Moran and his team, which will begin assembling the complex set.

As more volunteers join in, the props, makeup and costume departments will form well before the cast starts their strenuous rehearsal schedule. All of this activity will lead to that opening night, and everyone has agreed that the work is worth the thrill of watching everything come together, and the seeing audience react with delight at the production.

The cast has not yet been chosen. Auditions will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 and 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. on the Woodlands stage. All are welcome. Director Jerry Davis will need a lot of folks to fill the hefty cast requirements. For those who can sing a little, move a little, and have always wanted to be part of a funny Mel Brooks comedy, this is the one to join.
