Country Club Village to host 'Superfood for Super Seniors' event

As Americans of all ages continue to discover the positive impact of healthy eating on active aging, seniors in Hot Springs, are welcome to a "Superfood for Super Seniors Event" from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday to learn more about the ways that certain foods can improve their overall wellness and daily quality of life. The event will be held at Country Club Village and is just one element of the community's annual Wellness Month initiative. Held every August, Wellness Month empowers residents and local seniors to "Get Informed, Get Fit, Get Restored & Give Back" through numerous wellness-focused activities, inspirational events and advice from informative, expert speakers.

The Superfood for Super Seniors Event will feature:

• 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Ricky Keller, owner of Kelly Produce, will set-up an on-site Farmers Market showcasing a variety of locally sourced foods.

• 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Food drive benefiting Jackson House. Admission to the Farmers Market is free with the donation of a canned good. Most needed items include peanut butter, nuts, canned fish or chicken white meat, canned fruits in natural juices or dried fruit with no added sugar, canned chicken, tomato or vegetable soup, and wholegrain oatmeal or cereal.

• 10:30 a.m.: Presentation by Wendall Workman, pharmacist, Oakpark Pharmacy, who will discuss flu season and the value of getting a flu shot.

• 11 a.m.: Healthy cooking demonstration by William Brown, executive chef at Country Club Village, who will create fresh and healthy superfood parfaits to share with residents and guests.

• 11:30 a.m.: SuperFood "Eat & Greet" lunch, created by Chef William, featuring baked lemon rosemary salmon, garden wild rice with sauteed wild mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower and Julienne carrot mix, citrus spinach salad with sliced almonds and sweet potato pie. • 1:30 p.m.: "Super Senior Crowning" where Country Club Village residents will choose by ballot their favorite super healthy senior!

"Eating well is important for everyone at all ages, yet as we mature it becomes increasingly beneficial to incorporate nutrient-rich foods into our diet to promote a variety of health benefits," said Denise Park, director of wellness for Sunshine Retirement Living, operators of Country Club Village, in the release. "When you combine healthy eating with ample exercise, plenty of sleep, and a positive environment, research demonstrates that seniors can enjoy longer and more active lives. Each of our events, including our Wellness Month 'Superfood for Seniors' event, are geared toward educating and empowering seniors to seek out the best options to live the healthiest lives possible."

Additional Wellness Month activities at Country Club Village that are open to the public include:

• Get Informed: "How to Talk to Your Doctor" presentation by Janet Whitten, Oaklawn Center on Aging, on Friday, a Health Fair on Aug. 12, and blood pressure and blood sugar checks on Aug. 27 and more.

• Get Fit: Exercise classes on Aug. 8, 15 and 22 with Grace Labbe, line dancing at 11 a.m. every Tuesday and at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in August, and a tai chi class at 3 p.m. every Tuesday in August.

• Get Restored: Hearing Aid check and clean on 9 a.m. Wednesday, and a relaxation painting class at 1 p.m. Aug. 27.

• Give Back: Join Country Club Village's month-long food drive benefiting Jackson House.
