HS female angler takes $50K prize

LITTLE ROCK -- The first female winner of the Arkansas Big Bass Bonanza is from Garland County.

Robinette Fox, of Hot Springs, competing in the tournament for the 15th year and with her husband, earned the $50,000 first prize Sunday in competition against 1,693 other anglers. Her 7.15-pound bass Friday morning topped the standings all three days in the tournament rescheduled from late June because of extensive flooding on the Arkansas River.

A former Jessieville High basketball player, Fox caught the winning bass in the Dardanelle pool with a 10-inch "old monster worm."

Fox said, "My overall experience has been outrageous, happy and just crazy. I am very proud to be the first woman angler to win the tournament."

First-place winners of $10,000 in each of the other pools were:

* Anthony Craig, Lincoln (6.53 pounds) -- Fort Smith pool.

* Rusty Gosvener, Roland (6.01 pounds) -- North Little Rock pool.

* Jamey Taylor, Wynne (5.80 pounds) -- Dumas pool.

* Rob Stone, Cabot (5.54 pounds) -- Pine Bluff pool.

Brandon Ward and his father, Brent Ward, both from Pine Bluff, received $1,000 cash and the Willow Leaf Award as the parent/child or grandparent/granchild pair weighing the biggest fish. Their bass tipped the scales at 4.83 pounds.

Guaranteed prize money for each of the five pools is $900 to second place, $700 to third place and $400 to fourth place in each of the five pools. A total of $157,853 in prize money was awarded, with the hourly payouts $250 for first place, $200 for second and $150 for third.
