Man allegedly attacked with machete

A Hot Springs Village man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly attacking a Hot Springs man with a machete.

Scott Edmund Ohanian, 46, was charged with second-degree battery, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison. He was later released on a $2,500 bond and is due in Garland County District Court on Aug. 11.

At 6 a.m. Sunday, Officer 1st Class Threadgill responded to 863 W. St. Louis St. in reference to a victim who was hit with a machete. Threadgill made contact with the victim, who had blood on his arm and clothes. According to the affidavit, the victim pointed at the suspect, identified as Ohanian, and stated he was the one who hit him.

Ohanian reportedly went after the victim with the machete and swung it at him. The victim placed his left arm up in defense. He was later transported to CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs and it was determined he had a broken bone in his wrist in addition to a deep laceration.

• A local man who stated he was searching for loud animals Sunday morning was arrested after allegedly stealing property from a vehicle.

Norling

Kenneth S. Norling, 52, who listed a Phillips Street address, was charged with breaking or entering, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison. Norling remained in custody Monday in lieu of a $2,500 bond and is due in district court on Aug. 11.

Around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Officer Plummer and Officer 1st Class Ford responded to the 200 block of Glover Street in reference to a suspicious male. A witness pointed out the suspect, identified as Norling. Plummer located Norling as he was looking into the passenger side of a vehicle and when Plummer approached, Norling moved to the back of the vehicle.

According to the affidavit, Plummer observed an odor of intoxicants on his person, watery eyes and slurred speech. Norling also held a sign with a complaint about dogs barking in the area and he stated he was attempting to locate the residence with the loud animals. Plummer asked why he looked into the vehicle and Norling stated he didn't. Norling was placed into custody at that time and transported to the Garland County Detention Center.

At 4:50 a.m., Officer Plummer spoke with the witness, who stated Norling had been in the area since 4 a.m. He also stated Norling moved from Glover to Augustus streets no less than seven times before Plummer arrived. According to the affidavit, Norling also entered a vehicle and after exiting was seen carrying a bag.

The owner of the vehicle stated it was not in the condition she left it in and officers found the glove box open with contents spread throughout the vehicle. It was noted the rear driver side window was also broken.

Norling stated he was the only person in the area and he did interact with the vehicle three times, but claimed he only placed his note on the passenger window and removed it and denied removing any property from the vehicle.

• Hot Springs police officers arrested a 34-year-old man Sunday who allegedly stole his ex-girlfriend's cellphone.

Puente

Alberto Rodriguez Puente was taken into custody at his residence at 1611 Central Ave. and charged with theft of property, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail, and obstructing governmental operations. He remained in custody Monday in lieu of bonds totaling $1,500 and is due in district court on Aug. 18.

At 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Officer Scott and Officer 1st Class Chadick made contact with a victim at Starlite Club, 230 Ouachita Ave., in reference to a theft. She stated her ex-boyfriend, who she knew as "Mario Fruertes," came into the club, took her cellphone and ran out of the bar.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Scott, Chadick, Officer 1st Class Anaya and Sgt. Stockwell responded to El Rancho Motel, 1611 Central Ave., in reference to a disturbance involving the victim.

According to the affidavit, she stated she went to the residence to retrieve her phone. At that time, the suspect stated his name was not "Fruertes," and provided a name of "Pablo Calderon." The suspect was taken into custody and his fingerprints returned the identity of Puente.

• A West Memphis man was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly choking his girlfriend.

Husband

Chris Husband, 36, was charged with third-degree domestic battery, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. He remained in custody Monday on no bond and is due in district court on Aug. 11.

At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Officer 1st Class Jones responded to a disturbance at Shamrock Motel, 511 Albert Pike Road. The victim stated she and Husband were at a concert drinking before they returned to their room and drank more. She stated they became involved in an argument and Husband choked her. The victim fought back and got Husband off her, and he then went to sleep.

According to the affidavit, the victim woke up at 3 a.m. to Husband hitting her face with his fist. Husband stated he wasn't sure what happened or why they fought but he did remember the victim hitting him back.

• A 19-year-old Magic Springs Water and Theme Park employee was arrested Saturday after she allegedly admitted to stealing cash.

Starr

Jessica E. Starr, of Lonsdale, was charged with theft of property, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison. She remained in custody Monday in lieu of a $2,500 bond and is due in district court on Aug. 11.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, Officer Savage responded to Magic Springs, located at 1701 E. Grand Ave., in reference to a theft. The head of security stated he observed Starr take over $200 that night. He detained her in the security office until officers could arrive and obtained ticket stubs over the past month, which valued over $2,000.

According to the affidavit, Starr admitted she took over $2,000 in cash from the business over a month. She added she took parking tickets given to her by her manager, asked customers if they wanted the receipt and if they said no, she sold the ticket to a different customer. Starr then pocketed the money instead of cashing it in.

• After fleeing from police officers Saturday morning, a local man was arrested when he was found with cocaine in his pocket.

Duvall

Derek Antwan Duvall, 27, who listed a Washington Street address, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison, and fleeing. He remained in custody Monday on no bond and is due in district court on Aug. 11.

Officer responded to a fight at 1622 Central Ave. Saturday at 5:50 a.m. and as they arrived, a Chevrolet Trailblazer fled the area. Officer 1st Class Jones attempted to catch up to the Trailblazer, but it crashed into a second vehicle at 403 Charteroak St. The suspects in the Trailblazer then fled on foot. According to the affidavit, two suspects, one identified as Duvall, were located hiding under a porch at 401 Charteroak St.

Duvall was taken into custody and during a search, officers reportedly located a white substance in his pocket that tested positive for cocaine.

• A 51-year-old man who reportedly caused a car accident Friday night was taken into custody after allegedly threatening a Hot Springs police officer.

Bell

Tim Bell, of Arkadelphia, was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison, resisting arrest, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail, and disorderly conduct. He was later released on bonds totaling $4,500 and is due in district court on Aug. 11.

At 9:20 p.m. Friday, Lt. Davis responded to an accident on Carpenter Dam Road and was advised the person who caused it was possibly under the influence. Davis made contact with Bell, who was walking in the road. Davis asked Bell to step in front of his unit but he continued walking. Davis stated again for Bell to leave the road and stop walking.

According to the affidavit, Bell began yelling and stated, "Don't you put your f - - - - - - hands on me ... I'm on the phone with the Arkadelphia police." Davis advised Bell to calm down and when he refused, Davis attempted to grab his hands. Bell allegedly pulled away, clenched his fists and continued yelling. Davis pulled his Taser out and instructed Bell to get on the ground at that time.

Bell continued to resist and got into a fighting stance. Davis warned Bell at least 10 times if he did not get on the ground he would deploy the Taser. After calling for backup officers, Davis deployed the Taser. Bell grabbed the probes, spun around and fell into a ditch. At that point, Officer Ford arrived and placed Bell into custody. An ambulance was called to remove a Taser probe that was still in place.

According to the affidavit, Bell began threatening Davis and stated, "I'm going to get you ... you better watch your back," and, "I'm going (to) hunt you down." Bell was transported to National Park Medical Center and was asked to submit to a blood test to determine his blood alcohol. Officer McLean asked Bell how much he had to drink, and Bell allegedly stated, "Well, I won't come across all zeros."

While Bell was at the hospital he reportedly continued threatening Davis and stated, "I don't care if it takes me 10 years, I'm going to get that Davis," and, "I wish I had my .45 and I'd handle it right now." Mclean told Bell everything would be fine and Bell replied, "No I'm going to be all right when I get my .45 and then I'll make it right with Davis."

After Bell was released and taken to McLean's unit to be transported to the Garland County Sheriff's Department, Bell stated, "When I get out, I'm going (to) be a dangerous motherf - - - - - ."

According to the affidavit, witnesses at the scene of the car accident stated Bell crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and continued off the roadway before striking an embankment. Bell exited the vehicle and started to walk away but witnesses advised him he needed to stay there. Bell stated he had to go get help and continued walking away.
