Thankful for newspaper

Dear editor:

In response to the announcement in The Sentinel-Record on Wednesday, Aug. 26, of Bill Elderton as the new general manager, I would like to thank Mr. Elderton for his statement, "I consider a community newspaper a living, breathing entity."

The Sentinel-Record is as much a part of area life as Garvan Woodland Gardens, Bathhouse Row, the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa, and Oaklawn racetrack. I can't imagine my day starting without my Sentinel-Record. Where but the Letters to the Editor am I going to learn the facts of life? I mean the true facts of life. I mean every writer has a fact and I want to know those facts.

I consider the columnists on the Viewpoint page personal friends, even if I don't agree with their opinions all the time. The comics, the crossword puzzle and the local news of my friends and colleagues are important to me. The in-depth reporting of certain national and international issues is of benefit as well. The ads let me know what is special that day or week (yes, I do take notice of many) and the special issues published during the year contributes to community involvement and offers some fun participation, such as choosing your favorite restaurant, entertainer, art gallery or voting on the Woman or Man of the year.

By the way, I had the privilege of interacting with several of The Sentinel-Record staff recently and my question is, "Are they recruiting staff before high school graduation?" They look so very young.
