American history essay contest open to area youths

The essay contest "Turning Points in American History" is open to area youths ages 5-18 at the 2015 Garland County Fair, scheduled for Sept. 14-19 at the Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Ave.

For this fun and creative contest, students must choose a turning point in American history, write an essay and create a display no larger than 20-by-30 inches.

Works must be double-spaced, and sources must be documented.

Entrants must create a poster board-sized display, including the essay and visual aids representing the subject. The posters will be displayed throughout the duration of the fair in the Creative Arts Building.

Senior essays for ages 14-18 should be 750 to 1,000 words; junior essays for ages 9-13 are 500 to 750 words; and children's essays should be 250 to 500 words.

Exhibits will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12. The contest date and awards announcement will both be Sept. 19.

Awards are sponsored by The John Percifull Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Rosettes will be provided by Garland County Fair Association.
