Thea opens scholarship competitions

The Thea Foundation has launched its 14th annual scholarship competitions, which will award 30 scholarships totaling almost $80,000 to Arkansas high school seniors in the spring of 2016.

High school and home school seniors, as well as those obtaining a GED, are invited to compete in the categories of visual arts, performing arts, creative writing, fashion design, slam poetry and film.

Ten scholarships will be awarded in visual arts and performing arts, four in film and two each in slam poetry, fashion design and creative writing.

The film scholarships will be facilitated by the Arkansas Educational Television Network.

Scholarships range from $2,000 to $4,000.

Thea partners with 26 institutions of higher education across the nation who promise to match or exceed Thea scholarships for winners who choose to attend one of these universities. The list includes every four-year college in Arkansas, as well as Pulaski Technical College.

This year's competitions include a few changes from previous years: honorable mentions will no longer be awarded in any categories; students will be allowed to enter more than one competition for the first time, but only allowed to win a scholarship in one category; and the cash-prize visual arts competition for juniors has been eliminated.

Students may register online now through the online registration deadlines for each category, which are posted on the website alongside registration instructions and competition dates. Thorough registration instructions for each competition are offered at theafoundation.org under the tab "what we do" followed by "scholarships."

Since 2002, Thea has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to Arkansas high school seniors, distributed almost $1.5 million in art supplies to underfunded schools and implemented many programs that provide creative experiences for Arkansas's youth.
