Dear editor: Cellphone law needed

Dear editor:

Cellphone use while driving:

I read with dismay the article in this morning's (Feb. 25) paper about the "committee" voting down a bill that would save lives and greatly decrease accidents.

I submit that there are few drivers among us who haven't had to dodge someone using a cellphone. It is obvious to the most casual observer who is and who is not using a handheld phone while driving. The states that have made it against the law to use any handheld devices while driving have seen a marked reduction in accidents. The names of the yahoos who voted against it need to be published so that their constituents can know who they are and send them home at their next election.

The current law, I believe, states that if you are under 18, you cannot use a handheld device while driving. I don't care if you are 18-80 ... you cannot keep your attention on your driving if you are carrying on a conversation on a phone. Those who think they can are living in denial, and I am not talking about a river in Africa. It is high time our elected representatives update this law and get the phones out of all drivers' hands.
