Vegetarian club sees DVD on excitotoxins

The 6:30 p.m. Monday meeting of Vegetarian Supper Club will feature a DVD presentation by nationally recognized neurosurgeon, author and lecturer, Dr. Russell Blaylock. The presentation will focus on excitotoxins and their negative effects on the brain. Excitotoxins can be found in MSG, artificial sweeteners and chemicals used to color foods or enhance their flavor.

Blaylock is a retired clinical professor of neurosurgery from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, now serving as a visiting professor of neurosurgery at Belhaven University in Mississippi. He has authored a number of books and papers on current health issues.

Vegetarian Supper Club meetings are held in the fellowship hall of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 401 Weston Road. The club provides vegetarian cuisine, health information and fellowship. Attendees should bring a vegetarian dish with the recipe and a self-addressed envelope to receive the recipe collection for the evening. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. 'Elks' Day at the Races' observed today

John D. Amen, national president of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and first lady Marcia, will visit Hot Springs Elks Lodge 380 and attend "Elks' Day at the Races" at Oaklawn Park today.

As the Elks' grand exalted ruler, the order's title for its highest office, Amen is responsible for promoting the BPO Elks' Key Goals of Community Service; assistance for the handicapped, veterans and the less fortunate; and sponsorship of youth programs and scholarships.

State President Don Coots and Arkansas first lady Mona will be in attendance, as well as other national and state officers and their wives, and Elks from all the lodges in the state.

The grand exalted ruler will tour Oaklawn Park and present a trophy to the winning owner, trainer and jockey of a race sponsored by the Elks. Immediately after the races, a banquet will be held at the lodge in honor of the grand exalted ruler.

American history essay winner named

Joy Wetherbee, American History Committee chair for the Akansa Chapter NSDAR, presented the American History Essay Certificate, medal and monetary award to Fountain Lake seventh-grader Susannah Miller, who wrote an essay on the Ellis Island experience. The essay was forwarded to the state for consideration of the state award.

The American History essay contest is available to all fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, whether they attend public, private or parochial school, and those who are home schooled are eligible.
