Four years ago, on Jan. 1, 2011, the Rotary Club of North Garland County (Scenic 7) received its Rotary charter. Sponsored and mentored by the Rotary Club of Hot Springs Village, Scenic 7 is the newest Rotary club in Garland County. It serves the communities along the Highway 7 north corridor, between Fountain Lake and Jessieville schools.
The club's local projects have included the Fallen Heroes Memorial, books for local schools, a fundraiser for Teen Challenge, student scholarships for leadership training, and the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Event which is returning to the area on Feb. 16 at Jessieville Sports Arena.
Rotary is an international organization of more than 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs around the globe. As such, Scenic 7 Rotary has supported worldwide projects -- Heifer International, an orphanage in Mozambique, and continuing efforts to eradicate polio.
Recently, Scenic 7 Rotary was able to award three members of the club Paul Harris Fellows.
These were the first such fellowships to original charter members of the club. District Gov. Ernie Echelmeyer traveled from Russellville to present the awards. Scenic 7 Rotary meets at Charlie's Pizza Pub at noon Thursdays. Visitors are welcome. For more information, call Jan Saunders, 282-2024.
