Hot Springs Mountain work to begin Monday

Hot Springs Mountain

work to begin Monday

Traffic on Hot Springs Mountain Road to Hot Springs Mountain Tower, the overlooks and Gazebo will be rerouted for about three months beginning Monday.

Work crews under contract with the Federal Highway Administration will work to stabilize and rehabilitate one-third of a mile of historic rock walls.

"To accomplish this time-consuming task safely and still keep the Hot Springs Mountain open, we must temporarily close the entrance road to traffic and establish a two-way traffic lane for part of the road," Josie Fernandez, Hot Springs National Park Superintendent, said in a release.

The work is needed because the rock walls have become unstable through the years and are pushing away from the mountainside and water runoff is undermining the road surface.

Workers will remove the rocks, reinforce the mountainside and rebuild the walls using the same stones in the original place where they once stood.

Engineers estimate the work will be completed by April 30.
