HSIS student council steps up to plate

From Staff Reports

The Hot Springs Intermediate School student council, led by its president, Anna Fletcher, began the second semester of the 2014-2015 school year by taking charge of many current events and obligations.

Since Jan. 5, the student council and the HSIS parent teacher organization have been collecting canned food items to be stored in the Hot Springs Food Pantry, which helps supply families in need.

Each fifth- and sixth-grade class donates items, which are collected by the student council. The goods are then placed by grade levels at the front entrance of the school so the student body can see how many items each grade is "bringing to the table."

The classes who donated at least 100 canned food items will receive a popcorn party presented by the student council. The drive ended Jan. 30.

The council also prepared Valentine's Teddy Bears to be given out on Valentine's Day. Students pre-ordered teddy bears, which were customized with the name of the recipient and a brief message.

A special committee consisting of Jadyn Cross, Kason O'Reily and two other members oversaw the production of the teddy bears. The cost of each bear was $5. A total of 125 teddy bears were made for the intermediate school and Park Magnet, a PYP World School.

Each student council member takes part in a Teacher Assist Program. Members give up one recess each week in order to help a teacher with classroom duties. Duties may include classroom organization, filing novels, reading to students and mentoring students.

The student council teamed up with the Hot Springs High School student council to host "Student Council Night" during the home basketball games against Hope. "Goodie bags" were made and distributed to Trojan players and members of the away team.

Student council members served as concession stand runners until 7:30 p.m. At halftime of the senior high girls game, the council presidents, advisors and two audience members participated in a shoot-out contest.
