Clarendon boys, England girls win Mount Ida tourney

MOUNT IDA -- Clarendon's unbeaten boys and England's girls took home championship trophies from the weather-delayed Class 2A East Region basketball tournament here Sunday at Jeanne Smith Arena.

Senior Richard Knox scored 28 points, two on an alley-oop slam in the fourth quarter, as Clarendon rallied past England 61-50. The Clarendon Lions finished on a 22-6 run after trailing by five in the third quarter.

Three England Lady Lions -- two juniors and a sophomore -- scored in double figures in a 52-38 win over Magnet Cove. Julia Bryant had 16 points, Alesha Pennister 15 and Shavonte Blanks 13 for England, which led 25-16 at halftime and 35-21 after three quarters.

Sophomore Cami Wells scored 17 points and senior Casey Trantham 13 for Magnet Cove, which defeated 2A-5 rival Mountain Pine in the semifinals Saturday.

Junior Derrick Eason's rebound basket as the third quarter ended gave Clarendon a 45-44 lead. Senior Donnie Lowery's floater put Clarendon up by three, and classmate Styleen Tyler's basket launched an 11-0 run. England called timeout after Lowery's alley-oop pass to Knox with 3:47 left made it 53-46.

Tyler finished with 15 points. Senior Tyrik Harris led England with 20 points.

Because of weather-related problems in other regionals, the Class 2A state tournament in Pangburn has been pushed back one day. Clarendon's boys play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and England's boys at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. England's girls play at 4 p.m. Wednesday and Magnet Cove's girls at 4 p.m. Thursday.
