Warming center opens at St. Luke's Church

A warming center will open at St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 4 p.m. today and will remain open through Saturday morning after breakfast, church officials said Wednesday.

St. Luke's Kathy Randal said the church's parish hall at 228 Spring St. can accommodate between 40 or 50 people and will furnish cots and blankets provided by the Red Cross. Parishioners from St. Luke's and the First Baptist Church of Hot Springs will be volunteering, and Janie Smith of Jackson House said the crisis intervention center will provide meals.

Randal said the church served as a warming center in early January, serving between and 10 and 20 people, and opens its doors when the temperature falls below 20 degrees. Temperatures in the teens are forecast for early Friday.

"With the idea that somebody might freeze to death, we couldn't do nothing," said CB Baker, church pastor. "What we're doing is not much, but it's better than nothing."

Persons willing to volunteer to assist may call 623-1653 or 501-336-1111.
