Area woman attacks husband's vehicle with ax, gun

A Hot Springs man and his estranged wife were both arrested on felony charges Wednesday after an argument resulted in gunshots.

Jesse Glenn Smallwood, 24, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a family or household member and first-degree criminal mischief, each punishable by up to six years in prison, while Courtney Smallwood, 24, was charged with one count of aggravated assault on a family or household member.

Courtney Smallwood was later released on a $2,500 bond while Jesse Smallwood remained in custody Thursday in lieu of bonds totaling $7,500. Both are due in Garland County District Court April 7.

Around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to 264 Burlow Road in reference to a disturbance with a gun. Upon arrival they observed Jesse Smallwood sitting in a Jeep in the yard and Courtney Smallwood inside the residence with two other subjects.

Courtney Smallwood stated she and Jesse Smallwood were married but separated and he arrived at the residence to pick up their Jeep. According to the affidavit, she attempted to hit the front tire with a splitting maul as Jesse Smallwood rammed Courtney Smallwood's grandmother's vehicle. She then retrieved a handgun from the residence and, with her grandfather, attempted to stop Jesse Smallwood from leaving.

According to the affidavit, Courtney Smallwood stated Jesse Smallwood attempted to run over her and her grandfather. She then fired several shots at the Jeep. One shot hit the rear passenger side rim and another hit the passenger side front tire.

Jesse Smallwood caused $2,000 worth of damage to the grandmother's truck and $500 worth of damage to the yard. Cpl. Greg Kellar recovered the gun from a closet in the residence.
