Father, daughter volunteer at GCHS

Daughter-father team Susan Hunter and Henry de Linde volunteer at Garland County Historical Society. Hutner, a retired elementary teacher, and her father are in charge of the Veterans Room, which showcases photographs, documents, scrapbooks and memorabilia relating to Garland County military veterans.

De Linde, a retired claims specialist, is a veteran of World War II who saw much service in Europe. A GCHS board member, he has written articles for the society's journal, The Record, and is the society's "go-to" expert when people have questions about local railroads or local geology.

The society's volunteers are urging Garland County residents to take part in Arkansas Gives Day. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Arkansans can log onto http://arkansasgives.org and donate to the historical society or to other nonprofits.

Every dollar donated will earn the society additional bonus money from the Arkansas Community Foundation, which is sponsoring the one-day event. All of a donation (minus a small credit card fee) will go to the nonprofit, and the donations are tax-deductible.

"This is an easy, safe way for people to help us (or other nonprofits). GCHS totally depends on the community for the funds we need to keep the archives open and to continue our preservation and educational work. Dedicated volunteers like Henry and Susan do so much to save our heritage. I hope the community thanks them by donating on Arkansas Gives Day." said Liz Robbins, executive director, in the release.
