Ouachita downs Magnet Cove for 2A title

FAYETTEVILLE -- Ouachita High's baseball team stepped up in class this year but looked in a comfort zone down to the last pitch of the season.

Junior Logan Huneycutt pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and drove in a run Friday as the Warriors defeated Magnet Cove 4-1 in the Class 2A final at Baum Stadium. Ouachita defeated its conference rival four times this season.

Huneycutt was named the game's most valuable player, stranding two runners in the sixth inning and retiring the side in order in the seventh. The Warriors overcame three errors, Magnet Cove's only run coming in the third on a wild throw.

Hunter McDade's sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third. Huneycutt and McDade had back-to-back doubles after two out in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.

Shane Edwards took the loss, collecting his team's first hit.

Ouachita finished 17-2 with its first state baseball championship since 2000. Class 1A semifinalists last season, the Warriors moved up this season for travel considerations. Ouachita defeated Magnet Cove (15-7) in the region final for a top seed at state.
