Housing Authority celebrates Older Americans Month

May is national Older Americans Month, and the Housing Authority of the City of Hot Springs is planning to hold a celebration on Tuesday to recognize the important role played by older Americans.

The Housing Authority will host a luncheon on Tuesday at Mountainview Towers for all of its residents age 62 and older.

A recognition for the Housing Authority's longest-living resident, who also happens to be the resident who has lived in the Housing Authority the longest, was held earlier in the month.

The resident, Geraldine Washington, received a flower and balloon bouquet arrangement and certificates presented to her in her apartment by Richard Herrington Jr., executive director of the Housing Authority of the City of Hot Springs.

Surrounded by family who will represent her at the luncheon, Washington, 92, said she was overjoyed and very appreciative of the honors, according to a news release.

"I am really surprised at this. I did not expect it," Washington said.

Other events held throughout the month included a Financial Literacy program, Grief Support and Recovery, and a May Day Play Day, all provided by area businesses.

"The Housing Authority would like to thank all older Americans for their wisdom, values and the role they continue to play within our community," the release said.
