Civil War Expo set for Village

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War in 1865, and the Civil War Roundtable of Hot Springs Village will present the Hot Springs Village Civil War Expo at the Coronado Center from 9 a.m. to noon June 10.

The event is free and open to the public.

Joe Poindexter, president of the HSV Civil War Roundtable, said several Civil War groups and individuals will participate in the June 10 event.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Mark Christ, of Little Rock, community outreach director for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. Christ is a member of the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission. He has written, edited and coedited several books, including "Rugged and Sublime: The Civil War in Arkansas," "The Earth Shook and Trees Trembled: Civil War Arkansas 1863-1864," "The Die is Cast: Arkansas Goes to War, 1861," and "Civil War Arkansas, 1863: The Battle for a State," which won the Military Order of the Stars and Bars' 2010 Douglas Southall Freeman Award.

Keith Hammond, a resident of the Village, will speak about the HSV Civil War Roundtable, a group which meets monthly. Other speakers include Loy Mauch, author of "This Constitution Shall Be the Supreme Law of the Land," representing the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Margie Hill of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Along with Mark Christ, a number of authors will also speak about their books and be available for book signings. Chuck Allen's books include his Civil War trilogy, "Separately Together," consisting of "Steel in the Cotton," "Living Nightmares," and "Friends and Brothers."

Nancy Hendricks is author of "Terrible Swift Sword: Long Road to the Sultana" which has been called "Gone With the Wind" meets "Titanic."

Poindexter's books are "The Divided State," "Blue," and "The Darkest Night."

Many items will be on display, with some for sale. Villagers John Bowers and Hammond will present their artifacts. Among the items on display at the Expo will be Civil War flags, swords, military weapons, rare first edition books, and Civil War currency.
