Household Hazardous Waste collection set for Saturday

The second Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day of the year will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Garland County Fairgrounds, 4831 Malvern Ave.

Garland County residents can use the event to safely dispose of unused or leftover household products containing toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive chemicals, at no cost. There will also be a paint exchange center for paint that is still usable and store in the original container with a legible label.

Passenger tires, but no rims, and electronic waste will be accepted at the Garland County collection side only.

Clark County residents can take materials to the Clark County Fairgrounds in Arkadelphia from 8 a.m. until noon. Hot Spring County residents may take their materials to either of the collection locations.

A city news release said the event can help prevent hazardous items from ending up in landfills, sewer treatment, storm drainage or septic systems, streams and lakes. These products are also toxic, corrosive, flammable, or irritating to skin. They can cause fumes and fires and can endanger animals and children if left improperly stored at home.

Items that can be brought to the collection event include automotive substances such as antifreeze or brake fluid; paints, thinners, strippers and solvents; household pesticides and herbicides; water-based cleaners and bleaches; compressed gas cylinders; and old kerosene and diesel fuel.

Electronic waste can include monitors, computers, keyboards, mice, VCR and DVD players, televisions 19 inches or smaller, electronic games and microwaves.

Recyclable electronics are also accepted weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Regional Recycling Center behind the city sanitation office at 218 Runyon St. off Valley Street.

Products must be in original containers with labels attached. Unknown or explosive products will not be accepted, nor will lead acid batteries or those from autos, marine vehicles and golf carts. Items should be transported in a corrugated box for stability in a car trunk or truck bed, with lids tightly fastened.

The event, sponsored by the Southwest Central Regional Solid Waste Management District, is for household quantities only. Hazardous waste from companies and businesses cannot be accepted.
