Thin on numbers, Red Devils forfeit

MOUNTAIN PINE -- A challenging football season for Mountain Pine worsened Friday night when the Red Devils forfeited a conference game because of a numbers shortage.

Zack Gould reinjured his knee with 4:02 left in the second quarter, leaving Mountain Pine with no healthy running backs. The game stopped at that point, Bigelow leading 28-0 at Stanley May Field.

Mountain Pine came home at halftime of its Week 3 game at Mount Ida under similar circumstances. The Red Devils snapped a 33-game losing streak with a Week 4 victory over Cutter Morning Star but are 1-5 for the season and 1-2 in Class 2A-5. With four games left, Mountain Pine plays at Magnet Cove next week and has an Oct. 23 home date against England.

The Red Devils have been plagued with injuries all season, losing receiver/linebacker Trevor Bowden to a torn anterior cruciate ligament and receiver/cornerback Tyson Stewart, its biggest scoring threat, to a high ankle sprain. In addition, a Mountain Pine player was ejected from the Red Devils' 63-0 loss to Conway Christian last week, making him ineligible for the Bigelow game.

Bigelow, previously winless, scored twice in each quarter against Mountain Pine. Jacob Bradke ran nine yards for the first touchdown and Jeremiah Santiago 11 yards for the second, Johnny Ussery's two-point conversion after the latter making it 14-0.

Bigelow scored two touchdowns in the first 4:09 of the second quarter, Kennan Hollis breaking a 42-yard run and Steven Moorehead going 60 yards. Bradke ran for two points after Moorehead's touchdown.

Bigelow plays consecutive home games against Poyen and Magnet Cove before an Oct. 30 visit to Cutter Morning Star.
